When it comes to analogue graphic recording, you have a few materials to choose from, but two popular options that look professional stand out: foam boards and paper. Each has its unique advantages and challenges. So, how do you choose the right one for your next project? Let’s explore the benefits and limitations of both foam boards and paper for analogue graphic recording.
✨ The Benefits of Using Foam Boards For Live Graphic Recording

Foam boards offer a range of practical advantages that make them an excellent choice for certain situations. Here’s why you might consider them for your graphic recording:
1. Easy Mobility for Different Spaces
One of the standout features of foam boards is their sturdiness, allowing you to move them from room to room without the risk of damage. If your workshop involves splitting groups across various locations or capturing dynamic discussions in real-time, foam boards are ideal. I can easily transport the visual notes from one room to another, even between floors.
2. Durability for Long-Lasting Quality
Foam boards maintain their professional appearance longer than paper. This durability makes them suitable for longer-term displays in meeting rooms or public spaces, ensuring the graphic recording remains intact and engaging.
3. Convenient Packing and Display
When the session wraps up, cleaning up with foam boards is a breeze. Simply stack them for easy transport—no delicate folding or rolling necessary. This feature is particularly beneficial if I'm using multiple boards during a workshop, allowing for seamless transitions between activities. Plus, foam boards are ready for display right away, eliminating the need for additional framing or support.
4. Sturdy and Resilient
Unlike paper, foam boards are durable enough to handle being moved around, propped against walls, or stored with other materials without damage. This strength offers peace of mind, especially in busy or outdoor environments. You won’t have to worry about creasing, ripping, or warping, ensuring your recordings stay looking their best.
5. Considerations for Use
However, keep in mind that foam boards do have limitations. If you need to transport them over long distances—like on an airplane—they can be cumbersome. Since they aren’t foldable or rollable, you’ll need adequate space for transportation. Additionally, their size may pose challenges in tighter environments, making maneuverability more complex.
✨ The Benefits of Using Paper For Live Graphic Recording

1. Highly Portable
One of the greatest advantages of paper is its portability. It’s super easy to bring to any venue you need. Once I completed the graphic recording, I can simply roll it up, secure it, and you can take it anywhere with you. This is especially handy if you need to take a flight back to the office afterward.
2. Convenient Storage and Shipping
Storing paper is much simpler than managing foam boards. When rolled up, it takes up less space and can easily be tucked away in a corner of your office. (I also suggest hanging it up somewhere to keep it visible and showcase your work!) If you ever need to ship your graphic recordings, paper is more cost-effective and easier to package compared to foam boards, which can incur higher shipping costs and require special packaging.
3. No Need for Special Setup
Even if I bring my own setup, there are times when small rooms can make it tricky for foam boards and their stands to fit. With paper, I can easily stick it to the walls, which saves space and makes the most of tighter environments.
4. Fragility and Damage Risk
That said, paper does have some downsides. It’s more fragile than foam boards, which means it can be susceptible to tears, smudges, and wrinkles—even after framing or laminating. A careless spill or rough handling could compromise your work. Plus, paper tends to wear out faster than foam boards when displayed for a long time, as it can become crinkled or frayed over time.
